The Emeritus designation is an esteemed honor conferred by the Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC) to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, leadership, and contributions to the field of public safety, particularly in credentialing and professional development. The criteria and selection process for candidates considered for Emeritus status is summarized below.

Requirements for Emeritus Status
To be eligible for Emeritus status, candidates must be nominated by peers in the fire and emergency services and meet the following criteria:
- Current CPC Credential: The nominee must hold a valid CPC credential.
- Tenure: The nominee must have been credentialed by the CPC for at least 10 years.
- Retirement/Transition: The nominee must have retired from active duty or transitioned to a position unrelated to their previous work for which their original designation was granted.

- Nominations Due: Annually by November 1st.
- Announcement of Decisions: At the Excellence Conference the following calendar year.
Nomination for the Emeritus designation involves the following steps:
- Nomination Form: The nominator must complete the Emeritus Designation Nomination Form in Cloud Generation.
- Letters of Recommendation: Collect three letters of recommendation from peers in fire and emergency services who can attest to the candidate’s contributions and impact within the field. The letters should address the candidate’s qualifications in relation to the consideration criteria below.
- Documentation: Submit the completed nomination form, a detailed resume or CV for the nominee, and the letters of recommendation in Cloud Generation.
- Committee Review: An Emeritus Designation Committee will review nominations based on the outlined criteria and make formal recommendations to the CPC. The Emeritus Designation Review Committee may contact letter writers to validate and contextualize the contents of their recommendations.
- CPC Consideration: CPC will consider recommendations from the Emeritus Designation Committee for approval
Considerations for Granting Emeritus Status
Contributions to the Field
Candidates should demonstrate significant contributions to fire or emergency services at various levels. This includes participation in research, publication authorship, development of standards, and impactful roles within organizations.
Leadership Roles
Candidates must exhibit long-term contributions through leadership roles in local, state, national, or international organizations, including sustained commitment to credentialing and professional development.
Advocacy and Outreach
Candidates should show a commitment to advocating for professional credentialing, engaging with diverse stakeholder groups, and being recognized as ambassadors for credentialing within the broader public safety community.
Mentoring and Training
Candidates must have engaged in substantial professional development activities aimed at cultivating future leaders in fire and emergency services, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to mentoring and training.
